Laser resurfacing has split into two distinct options over the last few years. CoolPeel is an established resurfacing laser with a strong track record. UltraClear is a newer device designed to deliver similar results with a shorter recovery. Both target the same concerns, and both are worth understanding if you are considering laser resurfacing. Here is how they actually differ.
For most patients wanting visible resurfacing with a realistic recovery window, CoolPeel is the treatment we have more experience with and the one with the strongest evidence behind it. UltraClear is genuinely useful for lighter resurfacing on patients who cannot accept three to five days of visible downtime. For deeper scarring or textural concerns, CoolPeel still delivers more in fewer sessions.

CoolPeel removes microscopic areas of the skin surface in a precise, controlled way, leaving the surrounding skin untouched so recovery is faster. The precision of the treatment is what sets it apart from older resurfacing lasers, which tended to affect a much wider area and required significantly longer recovery.
UltraClear works in a similar way but gives the practitioner more control over how deep the treatment goes and how aggressively it works. It can be set to a lighter mode for patients who want gentle improvement with minimal downtime, or a deeper mode for patients who want more visible results. That adjustability is its main advantage.

CoolPeel suits patients with clear textural concerns: mild to moderate acne scarring, enlarged pores, fine lines, sun damage and general dullness. It is also useful for patients with lines around the mouth or lips where surface renewal is wanted.
UltraClear suits patients wanting a lighter touch: early texture changes, mild sun damage, subtle tone improvement, or patients new to laser who want to start conservatively. It is also a better option for patients whose work or lifestyle cannot accommodate visible downtime. It can be adjusted for deeper work, but we tend to use it as a lower downtime alternative rather than a direct replacement for CoolPeel.
The honest summary is that CoolPeel will give a more visible textural improvement in a single course, and UltraClear will get you most of the way there with less downtime. If you can accept three to five days of redness and flaking for a stronger result, CoolPeel is where we would start. If you cannot, UltraClear is a sensible alternative, with the understanding that results will be subtler and may need more sessions.
For acne scarring specifically, CoolPeel remains our preferred option and is often paired with microneedling if the scarring is deeper. For patients whose main concern is pigmentation rather than texture, a different treatment may be more appropriate and Dr Brennand will advise at consultation.
| Variable | CoolPeel | UltraClear |
|---|---|---|
Downtime | 3 to 5 days of redness and flaking | 1 to 3 days, often less |
Best for | Textural work, scarring, pores | Lighter resurfacing, maintenance |
Sessions | 1 to 3, spaced 6 weeks apart | 3 to 4, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart |
Evidence base | Well established | Newer, growing |
CoolPeel results begin to show as the skin settles in the first week, with continued smoothing over two to three months as the skin renews itself. Most patients do one to three sessions six weeks apart, and results last several years with consistent sun protection.
UltraClear results are subtler per session but appear sooner because the recovery is shorter. Most patients do three to four sessions four to six weeks apart for a result comparable to one or two CoolPeel sessions. Maintenance is usually once a year.

“We use both devices, and the choice is almost always about the patient’s tolerance for downtime. If a patient can take a long weekend, CoolPeel does more in fewer sessions. If they cannot, UltraClear is a capable alternative. What I push back on is the idea that UltraClear makes CoolPeel obsolete. It does not. For deeper scarring and visible textural change, CoolPeel is still the stronger tool.”

CoolPeel and UltraClear are both effective resurfacing treatments, but they suit different patients and different expectations. CoolPeel is the stronger choice if you want a more visible improvement to texture, scarring or pores and can allow a few days of recovery. UltraClear is the better fit if your concerns are milder or your schedule does not allow for downtime. For many patients the two can be used together as part of a longer plan. Dr Brennand will work through the right approach for your skin at consultation. Our clinic is at 101 Harley Street, London W1G 6AH, within easy walking distance of Bond Street, Oxford Circus and Regent’s Park. Book through the website or call us if you would rather speak first.

At L’Atelier Aesthetics, CoolPeel is generally the better choice for acne scarring because it works slightly deeper and has a longer track record for improving scarred skin. UltraClear can be used for milder scarring with less downtime, but deeper scarring responds better to CoolPeel, often paired with microneedling.
UltraClear downtime is typically one to three days of redness and mild swelling, shorter than CoolPeel. Most patients can return to work the next day with light makeup. Sun protection is essential for four weeks afterwards.
Most patients need one to three sessions spaced six weeks apart. Deeper scarring can take up to four sessions. The number is confirmed by Dr Brennand at consultation after assessing your skin.
Both CoolPeel and UltraClear can be used on medium skin tones with adjusted settings. On darker skin tones the risk of marking is higher, and Dr Brennand may recommend a different approach such as PicoSure or Morpheus8 if laser resurfacing is not the right fit for your skin.
No. Neither CoolPeel nor UltraClear is performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding at L’Atelier Aesthetics. We will schedule treatment after you have finished breastfeeding and your hormones have settled.
CoolPeel is priced per session, with courses of three usually offering the best value. UltraClear pricing varies with the area and depth of treatment and is confirmed at consultation. We do not run discount promotions on laser treatments.
