Chemical Peels: A Star Skin Treatment

Chemical Peels: A Star Skin Treatment

Chemical peels are a firm beauty favourite that leaves skin looking and feeling revitalised and radiant, with the potential for some seriously long-lasting results.

Whether you want to target imperfections like uneven tone or scarring or reduce lines, wrinkles and age spots for a more youthful appearance, there are lots of great benefits to having the treatment – and the best part is that you can have one in just a few minutes right in the capital on Harley Street.

How does a chemical peel work?

The treatment uses a solution to sweep away the older, duller cells on the surface of your skin and reveal the younger ones below while stimulating new growth. Most people have a chemical peel on their face, but it can be done on other areas, such as the hands or neck.

There are 3 levels of facial peel; superficial, medium and deep. Superficial and medium peels are non-permanent and you’ll need repeat treatments to maintain the results. Deeper peels give longer-lasting results and you won’t usually need any further treatments.

Who would benefit from a chemical peel?

Most people will see great results from the treatment, but it isn’t always advised for those with darker skin tones.

What happens during treatment?

The treatment time and procedure depend on the type of peel you’ve chosen. For a superficial peel, only the surface cells are treated, so you’ll only have the solution on your skin for a few minutes. For medium peels, the top and middle layers of the skin are treated, and the solution may need to be on your skin longer for the best results. For deep peels, you might need a sedative or local anaesthetic as the treatment penetrates more deeply into the skin. The effects are longer-lasting, so you won’t usually need to repeat the treatment.

How long will the results last?

For superficial peels, you can expect the effects to last for a few months. For medium peels, results last much longer; usually between 6-12 months. Finally, for deep peels, the results are much longer-lasting, and it’s likely you won’t need to repeat the treatment. To help results last as long as possible, we recommend protecting your skin from the sun with an SPF-containing product, like sunscreen or foundation.

Are there any side effects?

For any type of peel, it’s likely you’ll experience a bit of tightness in your skin during and after treatment, which should ease over time. For the more intensive peels, your skin may look a little red or brown afterwards. This should clear up in anything from a few days to a few months. You may also have some mild swelling, though this usually goes on within a couple of weeks.
