CoolPeel and PicoSure are two of the most requested laser treatments on Harley Street, and they are often discussed as if they do the same thing. They do not. CoolPeel smooths and resurfaces the skin. PicoSure targets pigmentation and breaks down unwanted colour in the skin. The concerns they treat overlap, but the results, the downtime and the right patient for each are quite different. This piece explains the real differences, and which one we reach for in which situation.
For skin texture, fine lines, enlarged pores and mild scarring, CoolPeel usually gives a stronger result because it visibly resurfaces and smooths the skin. PicoSure is the better choice for pigmentation, sun spots and uneven skin tone, where the goal is to clear discolouration rather than change texture. They are different tools for different jobs, and sometimes the right answer is both.

CoolPeel uses laser energy to remove the surface layer of skin in a controlled way, prompting the skin to heal and grow back smoother, clearer and more even in tone. Because the energy is delivered very precisely, the surrounding skin is left intact, which keeps recovery time shorter than older resurfacing treatments.
PicoSure works differently. Rather than removing skin, it delivers rapid bursts of energy that break up pigment particles and discolouration so the body can clear them naturally. It also encourages the skin to produce more collagen over time, which can improve tone and softness without any surface removal. The result is an improvement in pigmentation and skin quality with very little visible recovery.

CoolPeel suits patients with visible surface concerns: sun damage, enlarged pores, fine lines, uneven texture, mild acne scarring and general dullness. It works best on lighter skin tones, and Dr Brennand will advise at consultation if a different approach is more appropriate for your skin.
PicoSure suits patients with pigmentation, sun spots, freckling, melasma and certain types of scarring. It is also better suited to darker skin tones where lasers that remove the surface layer carry a higher risk of leaving marks. It is not, by itself, a treatment for texture or fine lines, and patients looking for that kind of result are usually better off with CoolPeel or a combination plan.
The biggest practical difference is downtime. CoolPeel produces three to five days of redness and light flaking as the skin heals, which some patients are fine with and others find limiting. PicoSure has effectively no downtime in most cases. That is why the two are often compared, even though they solve different problems.
Skin tone is the other important difference. CoolPeel needs careful consideration on darker skin, and sometimes we will recommend an alternative if the risk is not right for you. PicoSure has a better safety record across all skin tones and is often our first choice for pigmentation in patients with darker skin.
| Variable | CoolPeel | PicoSure |
|---|---|---|
Primary use | Texture, pores, fine lines, mild scarring | Pigmentation, sun spots, uneven tone |
Downtime | 3 to 5 days of redness and flaking | Minimal, mild redness for a few hours |
Sessions | 1 to 3, spaced 6 weeks apart | 3 to 5, spaced 4 weeks apart |
Best for | Lighter skin tones | All skin tones |
CoolPeel results are visible within one to two weeks of the first session, with further improvement over the following two to three months as the skin continues to renew itself. Most patients do one to three sessions, and results last several years with good sun protection.
PicoSure pigmentation results improve gradually over three to four sessions, with steady lightening rather than an immediate change. Tattoo fading takes longer, typically five to eight sessions depending on the ink. A maintenance session once or twice a year keeps the skin tone even.

“Patients often arrive asking for CoolPeel when what they actually need is PicoSure, and vice versa. If the concern is texture, pores or fine lines, CoolPeel is the stronger answer. If the concern is pigmentation, sun damage or uneven tone, PicoSure is the stronger answer. The skill of the consultation is in separating the two, because on the face they often co-exist and the right answer can be both, sequenced properly.”

At the clinic, CoolPeel treatments are delivered by our team, Emma, Kate and Bronte, under Dr Brennand’s clinical lead. He assesses the skin at consultation, sets the treatment plan and parameters, and the team carries out the session.
CoolPeel and PicoSure are both excellent treatments, but they work in different ways and suit different concerns. CoolPeel is the stronger choice if you want to improve texture, smooth fine lines or reduce pore size. PicoSure is the stronger choice if your main concern is pigmentation, sun damage or uneven tone. For many patients the answer involves both, planned in the right order. Dr Brennand will work through which approach is right for your skin at consultation. Our clinic is at 101 Harley Street, London W1G 6AH, a short walk from Bond Street and Oxford Circus. You can book through our contact page or call us to arrange a time.

At L’Atelier Aesthetics, CoolPeel is typically the better laser for fine lines and surface wrinkles, because it smooths and resurfaces the skin directly. PicoSure can improve skin tone and support collagen production, but for lines and texture CoolPeel delivers a more visible result in fewer sessions.
CoolPeel can be used on some darker skin tones with adjusted settings, but there is a higher risk of leaving marks on very dark skin and we are cautious about treating where that risk is not justified. Dr Brennand will assess your skin at consultation and will recommend PicoSure or a different approach if CoolPeel is not right for you.
Downtime after CoolPeel is typically three to five days of redness and light flaking. Makeup can usually be applied from day three. We recommend strict sun protection for six weeks after treatment.
Most patients need three to five sessions spaced four weeks apart for pigmentation concerns. Tattoo removal usually takes five to eight sessions depending on the ink. Dr Brennand will estimate the session count at consultation.
Yes. Many patients benefit from a combined plan, with PicoSure addressing pigmentation first, then CoolPeel addressing texture once the skin has settled. Dr Brennand will plan the sequence at consultation.
CoolPeel is priced per session, with courses of three usually offering the best value for deeper concerns. Pricing is discussed openly at consultation.
