You Asked: How Does Microneedling Work?

At our skin clinic here in Harley Street, we help men and women achieve healthier, younger-looking skin while giving you a boost of confidence along the way. One of our favourite transformational treatments is microneedling, so in today’s post we’ll go into a bit of detail about what it is and how it all works.

So, what is microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin rejuvenating treatment that uses a medical grade device to gently pierce the skin and kickstart its innate healing process. Not only does this help to tone and tighten skin, but it can also improve its texture to tackle problems such as pigmentation and acne scarring. Microneedling also helps improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and during the healing process, the skin generates more collagen, which is a key protein that keeps skin strong and supple.

Is microneedling safe?

It’s very safe and is carried out in a clean, sterile environment here in our Harley Street skin clinic. Considering alternatives such as surgical facelifts, it’s very low-risk and the recovery/downtime is minimal. Finally, as far as side-effects go, most people only experience mild redness, tenderness and sensitivity, which alleviates after a few days and can be kept comfortable through over-the-counter pain relief, such as paracetamol, and by using sun protection (as your skin may be sensitive to begin with).

How effective is treatment?

Generally, microneedling results take around 6 weeks to appear, as part of the process is the skin healing and rejuvenating, and last a number of months. A course of treatments is usually recommended for best results, which we can advise you on during your consultation. A good rule of thumb is 3 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart.

What else can I try for my skin?

It depends what you’re treating. Chemical peels can also have a rejuvenating effect and can be effective on scarring (such as acne scarring) and pigmentation (such as sun spots and melasma). For signs of ageing such as lines and wrinkles, dermal fillers could be considered. It may be that for optimum results, you’ll need a combination of treatments. This is something we’ll discuss with you during your consultation.
