Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling has become one of the most popular treatment options amongst patients looking for improved skin texture, skin laxity, pigmentation, laxity or scarring. Three prominent devices patients ask about most frequently are Morpheus8, Secret RF and POTENZA. On paper they look similar. In practice, there are meaningful differences in what each can achieve, which patient each is best suited to, and how results compare across a course of treatment.
At L’Atelier Aesthetics, 101 Harley Street, Dr Duncan Brennand uses Morpheus8 as the primary radiofrequency microneedling device and our prices start from £550.00 . This guide explains why, how the three compare, and what patients considering any of them should know before booking.
Radiofrequency microneedling is an advanced form of microneedling that combines two forms of stimulation in one treatment: controlled needle injury and targeted heat.
Like traditional microneedling, very fine needles are used to create precise micro-injuries in the skin. This triggers the skin’s natural repair process and encourages the production of fresh collagen and elastin. Over time, this can help improve skin texture, fine lines, enlarged pores and mild acne scarring.
The difference with radiofrequency microneedling is that heat energy is also delivered into the skin through the needles. This radiofrequency energy warms the deeper layers of the skin, creating a stronger collagen-remodelling response than needling alone. For patients, this means RF microneedling is usually chosen when the concern is not just surface texture, but also skin laxity, softening of the jawline, deeper acne scarring or a loss of firmness.
Regular microneedling treatments, such as SkinPen, are excellent for improving skin quality, texture, superficial scarring and overall radiance. They work mainly by stimulating the skin’s wound-healing response. RF microneedling takes this further by adding controlled heat, which allows the treatment to target deeper structural changes in the skin.
This is why SkinPen and RF microneedling are not really direct replacements for one another. SkinPen is often better suited to patients who want a lighter, skin-quality treatment with minimal downtime. RF microneedling is usually more appropriate when the aim is tightening, contour support or more significant collagen remodelling.

The best RF microneedling device depends on the concern being treated, the depth of remodelling required and the quality of the clinical assessment before treatment.
For patients concerned with skin laxity, early jowling, jawline softening or acne scarring, Morpheus8 is often considered the strongest option of the three. Its key advantage is depth. Morpheus8 can reach deeper layers of the skin and subdermal tissue than many other RF microneedling devices, which is why it is often chosen when the aim is more visible tightening, contour refinement or scar remodelling.
Secret RF is usually positioned as a good option for overall skin quality, mild textural change and general rejuvenation. POTENZA offers a high level of adjustability in the way radiofrequency energy is delivered, making it a capable choice for superficial to medium-depth concerns.
At L’Atelier Aesthetics, device choice is never based on trend alone. For patients presenting with laxity, acne scarring or lower-face softening, Morpheus8 is most commonly the treatment selected because it aligns with the level of remodelling needed. For milder concerns, other RF microneedling technologies can still be effective, but the result depends heavily on the person assessing the skin, planning the treatment and carrying it out. In experienced hands, the device is only one part of the outcome.

RF microneedling is most suitable for patients who want to improve firmness, texture and skin quality without changing the natural shape of the face. At L’Atelier Aesthetics, Morpheus8 is often the preferred RF microneedling treatment when the concern is early to moderate laxity, acne scarring, enlarged pores, crepey texture or softening through the jawline and lower face.
The treatment is particularly useful when the skin needs deeper collagen remodelling rather than surface refinement alone. This is where Morpheus8 can be a strong option. By combining microneedling with radiofrequency heat at controlled depths, it can help tighten, firm and remodel the skin over time, making it especially relevant for patients noticing looser skin, reduced definition or scarring that has not responded sufficiently to lighter skin treatments.
One of the practical advantages of RF microneedling is that it does not target pigment in the same way as some laser treatments. This means it can often be considered across a broad range of skin tones, although suitability still needs to be assessed carefully, especially for patients prone to pigmentation or post-inflammatory marks.
RF microneedling is not suitable during pregnancy, or for patients with a pacemaker or implanted electronic device. It should also be avoided where there is an active skin infection in the treatment area, active cystic acne, or recent isotretinoin use within the last six months.
It is also important to understand what Morpheus8 is not designed to do. It is not a volume replacement treatment. If the main concern is hollowing in the cheeks, temples or under the eyes, dermal filler or another restorative treatment may be more appropriate. Where the concern is skin laxity, texture, acne scarring or lower-face softening, Morpheus8 is often a more relevant starting point.
At consultation, the L’Atelier team will assess your skin, medical history and treatment goals before recommending the most suitable approach. If Morpheus8 is likely to give the best result, this will be explained clearly. If another treatment would be more appropriate, you will be advised honestly.
The deeper reach of Morpheus8 is the principal reason it tends to produce stronger results for skin laxity and collagen rebuilding. For a patient in their late thirties or forties with early jowling, loose skin along the jawline or established acne scarring, treating at greater depth makes a visible difference to the outcome. For patients with milder surface concerns, Secret RF or Potenza will often achieve a comparable result and may be a slightly more comfortable experience.
The coated needles used in Morpheus8 also mean the skin surface is exposed to less heat during treatment, which is a relevant consideration for patients with darker skin tones where there is a greater risk of post-treatment marking.
Potenza’s ability to switch between two energy modes is a genuine technical advantage – but only where the practitioner uses both consistently. Secret RF is the most straightforward of the three to operate, which is why it appears most frequently in less specialist settings. None of this is a reason to avoid either device, but it is a reason to ask any clinic about their treatment volume and to review results from their own patients rather than manufacturer materials.
For patients who want a firming effect without any needling, Sofwave uses ultrasound to produce a comparable tightening result with no downtime and no penetration of the skin surface.
| Variable | Morpheus8 | Secret RF | Potenza |
|---|---|---|---|
Treatment depth | Deepest, up to 4mm | Medium, up to 3.5mm | Medium, up to 3.5mm |
Best for | Skin laxity, acne scarring, lower-face definition | General skin improvement, texture | Surface to medium-depth concerns |
Downtime | 24 to 48 hours of redness | 24 to 48 hours of redness | Around 24 hours of redness |
Morpheus8 is not a single-session treatment. Results build across a course, and the timeline for seeing the full effect is longer than patients sometimes expect.
A standard course is three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Redness settles within 24 to 48 hours and most patients are comfortable in makeup the following day. Early improvements in skin quality are usually noticeable within two to three weeks. The full result becomes visible at around three months after the final session, once new collagen formation has had time to develop fully. Results typically last 12 to 18 months, with a single maintenance session once a year sufficient to sustain the improvement.

“With RF microneedling, the device matters, but it is not the whole story. The result depends on choosing the right treatment for the right patient, then adjusting the depth, energy and treatment plan carefully. For patients with skin laxity, acne scarring or softening through the lower face, Morpheus8 is usually my starting point because it allows us to treat at a meaningful depth. It is particularly useful when we want to improve the quality and firmness of the skin, rather than simply refresh the surface. What matters most is that the treatment is properly assessed, planned and delivered. Morpheus8 is not a treatment I would want performed as a standard setting for every patient. The skin, the concern and the patient’s expectations all need to guide the plan.”

The main differences are treatment depth, energy delivery and how the device is used by the practitioner. Morpheus8 is known for treating at greater depths, which makes it particularly useful for skin laxity, acne scarring and lower-face definition. Secret RF is often used for general skin rejuvenation and texture. Potenza offers more adjustability in energy delivery and can be useful for surface to medium-depth concerns. The device matters, but the assessment, settings and treatment plan are just as important.
Morpheus8 is often the stronger choice when the concern is skin laxity, lower-face softening, early jowling or acne scarring. Its main advantage is treatment depth, which allows it to reach deeper layers of the skin and support more meaningful collagen remodelling. Secret RF can still be a good option for patients looking to improve general skin quality, mild texture concerns or early signs of ageing, but for firmer skin and deeper remodelling, Morpheus8 is usually the treatment we would start with at L’Atelier Aesthetics.
Morpheus8 and Potenza are both RF microneedling treatments, but they are not always used for the same type of patient. Potenza offers flexibility in how radiofrequency energy is delivered, which can be useful for more superficial to medium-depth concerns. Morpheus8 is generally preferred when the aim is to treat deeper laxity, acne scarring or softening through the jawline and lower face. The better treatment depends on the concern, but for patients who need deeper collagen remodelling, Morpheus8 is often the more appropriate option.
Morpheus8 is described by most patients as uncomfortable rather than painful. We apply a numbing cream for 30 to 45 minutes before treatment, which makes the session manageable. The deeper settings used on the jawline and neck are the most intense part, and some warmth can linger for a few hours afterwards.
For acne scarring, Morpheus8 is often the preferred RF microneedling option because it can treat at a meaningful depth and stimulate collagen remodelling in areas where scarring has affected the structure of the skin. Secret RF and Potenza may help with lighter textural irregularity, but deeper or more established acne scarring usually needs a treatment that can work beyond the surface. At L’Atelier Aesthetics, Dr Duncan Brennand will assess the type of scarring before advising whether Morpheus8 is the right option.
Results typically last 12 to 18 months after a course of three sessions. Because the treatment works by rebuilding collagen, the result you see at three months is what you keep, gradually tapering as your skin continues to age. A single maintenance session once a year tops up the benefit.
Most patients need three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Deeper concerns such as established acne scarring or significant lower-face laxity occasionally need a fourth. Dr Brennand confirms the number at consultation based on what you are treating.
Downtime is 24 to 48 hours of visible redness, sometimes with a faint grid pattern where the needle tips contacted the skin. Most patients feel comfortable back in makeup the following day. Heavy exercise, saunas and active skincare products should be avoided for 48 hours.
Morpheus8 is not suitable during pregnancy, for patients with a pacemaker or implanted electronic device, with active skin infection in the treatment area, with active cystic acne, or within six months of finishing isotretinoin. It is also not a volume treatment, so if the main concern is hollowing rather than laxity, we will recommend a different plan at consultation.
Morpheus8 is priced per session and per course, with a three-session course on a single area usually offering the best value. Pricing varies with the treatment area and is discussed openly at consultation. We do not run discount promotions on clinical treatments.
For skin tightening, Morpheus8 is usually the strongest of the three options discussed in this guide. It is commonly selected for patients with early to moderate laxity, softening along the jawline, mild jowling or looser skin through the lower face and neck. Secret RF and Potenza may still improve skin quality and firmness, but Morpheus8 is generally better suited when tightening and deeper collagen remodelling are the main priorities.
