Morpheus8, Secret RF and Potenza all use radiofrequency microneedling, and on paper they look similar enough that patients often ask which one is actually better. The answer depends on what you are treating, how deep the concern sits, and which device the clinic has been properly trained on. Below is how the three compare in practice, and how we use Morpheus8 at the clinic.
Morpheus8 works deeper into the skin than Secret RF or Potenza, which makes it the stronger choice for sagging skin, jawline definition and acne scarring in the lower face. Secret RF sits in the middle and is often used for general skin improvement. Potenza is newer, offers more flexibility in how it delivers energy, and works well for surface to medium-depth concerns. For most patients coming to us with skin laxity or scarring, Morpheus8 is the treatment we plan.

All three devices work in the same basic way. Fine needles create tiny controlled injuries in the skin while heat is delivered into the skin at the tip of each needle. The combination of the two triggers the skin to produce new collagen and elastin over the following weeks. That new collagen is what tightens, thickens and refines the skin over time, producing the firming effect patients are looking for.
The key differences between devices come down to how deep the needles go, how the heat is focused, and whether the needles are coated to protect the surface of the skin. These are the variables that actually change results between the three.

Good candidates are patients with early to moderate skin laxity, acne scarring, enlarged pores, crepey skin texture, or loss of definition along the jawline. It is also a sensible treatment for patients whose main concern is softening or sagging along the lower face. Skin tone is rarely a barrier because radiofrequency does not target pigment in the same way lasers do, making it generally safe across all skin tones.
It is not the right treatment for patients with active cystic acne, anyone who has taken isotretinoin in the last six months, patients with a pacemaker or implanted electronic device, active skin infection in the area being treated, or during pregnancy. It is also not a volume treatment. If the main concern is hollow cheeks or a flat under-eye area, a filler conversation at consultation is more appropriate.
The deeper reach is the main reason Morpheus8 tends to win for skin laxity work in the lower face and for meaningful collagen rebuilding. For a patient in their late thirties or forties with early jowling, loose skin along the jawline, or acne scarring, treating deeper makes a visible difference to the result. For a patient with milder surface concerns, Secret RF or Potenza will often get there and may be slightly more comfortable.
The coated needles on Morpheus8 also mean the surface of the skin sees less heat, which matters for patients with darker skin tones where there is a higher risk of marking.
Potenza’s ability to switch between two different energy modes is useful in theory, but the advantage only shows up when the practitioner actually uses both, which is not always the case. Secret RF is the simplest of the three to operate, which is why it appears most often in less specialist settings. None of this is a reason to avoid Secret RF or Potenza entirely, but it is a reason to ask the clinic how many treatments they have done and to look at results from their own patients rather than manufacturer images.
For patients who want skin tightening without any needles, Sofwave uses ultrasound to achieve a similar firming effect with no downtime and no puncturing of the skin.
| Variable | Morpheus8 | Secret RF | Potenza |
|---|---|---|---|
Treatment depth | Deepest, up to 4mm | Medium, up to 3.5mm | Medium, up to 3.5mm |
Best for | Skin laxity, acne scarring, lower-face definition | General skin improvement, texture | Surface to medium-depth concerns |
Downtime | 24 to 48 hours of redness | 24 to 48 hours of redness | Around 24 hours of redness |
Morpheus8 is not a one-session treatment. Most patients need a course for the results to build properly.
A typical plan is three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Redness settles within 24 to 48 hours and most patients are comfortable in makeup the following day. Early improvements in skin quality appear within two to three weeks, with the full result showing around three months after the final session once the new collagen has fully developed. Results typically last 12 to 18 months, with a maintenance session once a year to keep things going.

“The honest answer is that the difference between these three devices matters less than the person using it. Treatment depth, energy settings and aftercare guidance drive the majority of the result. What I tell patients is that if you have genuine skin laxity or scarring and the clinic has Morpheus8 and has used it at volume, that is where I would start. If the clinic has Secret RF or Potenza and knows those devices well, that is often fine for lighter concerns. The device is the tool. The clinician decides how to use it.”

At the clinic, Dr Brennand assesses every patient for radiofrequency microneedling during consultation and sets the treatment depth, energy level and session plan. The treatment itself is delivered by our team, Emma, Kate and Bronte, under his clinical lead. The consultation is genuinely diagnostic rather than a sales conversation, and the team performing the treatment work at volume, which is where technique gets refined.
Morpheus8, Secret RF and Potenza all deliver results through the same basic approach, but Morpheus8 works deeper and has the strongest track record for skin laxity, jawline definition and acne scarring. For milder concerns or patients who want a gentler experience, Secret RF and Potenza are both capable alternatives. Whichever device is right for you, the quality of the consultation and the experience of the person performing the treatment matter as much as the technology itself. Dr Brennand will work through the right plan for your skin at consultation. Our clinic is at 101 Harley Street, London W1G 6AH, a short walk from Bond Street, Oxford Circus and Regent’s Park. Book through the website or call us to arrange a time.

Morpheus8 is described by most patients as uncomfortable rather than painful. We apply a numbing cream for 30 to 45 minutes before treatment, which makes the session manageable. The deeper settings used on the jawline and neck are the most intense part, and some warmth can linger for a few hours afterwards.
Results typically last 12 to 18 months after a course of three sessions. Because the treatment works by rebuilding collagen, the result you see at three months is what you keep, gradually tapering as your skin continues to age. A single maintenance session once a year tops up the benefit.
Most patients need three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Deeper concerns such as established acne scarring or significant lower-face laxity occasionally need a fourth. Dr Brennand confirms the number at consultation based on what you are treating.
Downtime is 24 to 48 hours of visible redness, sometimes with a faint grid pattern where the needle tips contacted the skin. Most patients feel comfortable back in makeup the following day. Heavy exercise, saunas and active skincare products should be avoided for 48 hours.
Morpheus8 is not suitable during pregnancy, for patients with a pacemaker or implanted electronic device, with active skin infection in the treatment area, with active cystic acne, or within six months of finishing isotretinoin. It is also not a volume treatment, so if the main concern is hollowing rather than laxity, we will recommend a different plan at consultation.
Morpheus8 is priced per session and per course, with a three-session course on a single area usually offering the best value. Pricing varies with the treatment area and is discussed openly at consultation. We do not run discount promotions on clinical treatments.
