Laser resurfacing has a long history of over-promising. CoolPeel is the first device I have used that delivers on most of its claims without the extended recovery time that made older CO2 lasers such a difficult recommendation. That does not mean it is right for everyone, and it does not mean it is good value for every concern. Below is my honest review after treating hundreds of patients with CoolPeel at the clinic.
For patients with surface texture concerns, fine lines, enlarged pores and mild acne scarring, CoolPeel is genuinely worth it. It delivers visible improvement in a single session with three to five days of manageable downtime. For patients whose main concern is sagging rather than texture, or pigmentation rather than pores, CoolPeel is not the right answer, and the money is better spent on Sofwave, Morpheus8 or PicoSure depending on the concern.

CoolPeel is a resurfacing laser that removes tiny precise columns of the skin surface while leaving the surrounding skin intact. That surrounding skin is what speeds the healing process, which is why recovery is measured in days rather than weeks. Over the following two weeks new skin grows back into the treated areas, and over two to three months the skin continues to improve as it produces new collagen beneath the surface. The result is a visibly smoother, more even skin surface.
The reason CoolPeel is an improvement on older CO2 lasers is how precisely the energy is delivered. Older versions transferred heat into the surrounding tissue, which caused heavier recovery and a higher risk of marking. CoolPeel avoids that, which is why the downtime drops to three to five days and the treatment can be repeated safely.

CoolPeel suits patients in their thirties, forties and fifties with visible surface concerns. Typical candidates have enlarged pores, forehead lines, lip lines, mild acne scarring, crepey texture, sun damage or general loss of skin quality. It works best on lighter to medium skin tones. On darker skin tones we use more conservative settings, and for the darkest skin tones we may recommend a different approach altogether.
CoolPeel is not appropriate during pregnancy, with active skin infection in the area being treated, within six months of finishing isotretinoin, or for patients with a history of raised scarring. It is also not a volume treatment, so if the main concern is sagging, hollowing or a flat under-eye area, we will recommend a different route.
Where CoolPeel wins is texture. Fine lines, enlarged pores, crepey skin and mild acne scarring all respond predictably. Where it falls short is laxity and pigmentation. For laxity, Sofwave or Morpheus8 are the better tools. For pigmentation, PicoSure or a carefully chosen chemical peel sequence will do more. Most patient disappointment with CoolPeel comes from using it for the wrong concern.
| Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|
Visible surface smoothing in one session | Not a treatment for sagging or laxity |
Effective on pores, fine lines and mild scarring | Not a pigmentation-targeted laser |
Shorter recovery than older CO2 lasers | Still 3 to 5 days of visible downtime |
Good for lighter to medium skin tones | Higher risk on darker skin tones |
The surface improvement is visible within a week of the skin settling. The deeper collagen response continues for two to three months, which is when most patients notice the final result. Results last several years with consistent sun protection. A single session often delivers two to three years of meaningfully better skin texture, and a maintenance session every 18 to 24 months holds the benefit. For deeper textural concerns, a course of two or three sessions six weeks apart produces a more complete result.

“The honest recommendation is that CoolPeel is worth it when the concern is texture, and it is not worth it when the concern is something else. The disappointment I hear about is not from patients who had it for the right reason. It is from patients who had it for sagging and got smoother skin that still sagged. The decision is made at consultation, and I am happy to direct patients to a different device when CoolPeel is not the right tool.”

At the clinic, CoolPeel treatments are delivered by our team, Emma, Kate and Bronte, under Dr Brennand’s clinical lead. Dr Brennand assesses the skin at consultation, sets the depth and parameters, and hands over to the team for the session itself.
CoolPeel is one of the most effective single-session treatments for skin texture, pores and fine lines that we offer. It delivers results that would previously have required a much longer recovery, and for the right patient it is genuinely worth the investment. The key is making sure the concern is the right one. Dr Brennand will be straightforward at consultation if a different treatment is a better fit for what you want to achieve. Our clinic is at 101 Harley Street, London W1G 6AH, around five to ten minutes on foot from Bond Street, Oxford Circus or Regent’s Park. Book through the contact page or call us to arrange a time.

CoolPeel is worth it for patients with texture concerns, enlarged pores, fine lines and mild acne scarring, where a single session produces a visible improvement. For sagging or pigmentation, Dr Brennand may recommend a different device. The decision sits with the consultation, not the marketing.
Downtime is typically three to five days of redness and light flaking. Makeup can usually be applied from day three. Strict sun protection is needed for six weeks after treatment.
Most patients see meaningful results from a single session. Deeper scarring or more significant texture concerns may need a course of two or three sessions spaced six weeks apart. Dr Brennand confirms the number at consultation.
Most patients describe it as a warm tingling sensation during treatment, manageable with numbing cream applied 30 to 45 minutes beforehand. A feeling of warmth persists for a couple of hours afterwards and then settles.
Yes. CoolPeel works well on mild to moderate acne scarring. Deeper scarring often benefits from pairing CoolPeel with microneedling for a more complete result.
CoolPeel is priced per session, with courses of two or three sessions offering the best value for deeper concerns. Pricing is discussed openly at consultation.
