Is one SkinPen session enough, or do you need a course? Learn why three treatments are often recommended, how appointments are spaced, and where the complimentary HydraFacial fits.

For many patients with texture concerns, a SkinPen microneedling course is worth it, because SkinPen works by stimulating collagen, and collagen builds gradually over several treatments. A single session can brighten and refresh the skin, but concerns such as acne scarring, enlarged pores and uneven texture usually respond best to a short course. Whether a course is right for you depends on your skin, your goals and what you expect to see.
At L’Atelier Aesthetics on Harley Street, SkinPen is one of our most requested skin treatments, and patients often ask whether committing to three sessions is necessary. This guide explains who a course suits, why it is often recommended, what happens across your appointments, and how our October SkinPen course works.
A SkinPen course is usually right for patients whose main concerns relate to skin texture and surface quality, and who are happy with gradual, natural-looking improvement.
SkinPen is a medical-grade microneedling treatment that creates thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin. This prompts the skin’s natural repair response, increasing collagen and elastin production over the following weeks. It is commonly considered for:
SkinPen is not designed to address volume loss or significant skin laxity. If firmness is your main concern, a treatment such as Sofwave may be more appropriate, and where volume loss is the priority, dermal fillers or collagen-stimulating injectables may be discussed. Microneedling may also need to wait if you have active acne, a skin infection or a flare of an inflammatory skin condition. Your practitioner will check this at consultation.
Realistic expectations matter. SkinPen improves the condition of your skin step by step: smoother texture, softer-looking scarring, refined pores and a healthier overall appearance. It does not create an overnight transformation.

A course is often recommended because each SkinPen session builds on the collagen response started by the one before, so improvement is more noticeable over several treatments.
After a single session, many patients notice brighter, fresher-looking skin within a week or two. Changes to texture and scarring, however, depend on new collagen forming beneath the surface, which takes time. Repeating treatment at planned intervals gives the skin several opportunities to repair and strengthen.
That does not mean everyone needs three sessions. If your goal is a general refresh, one treatment may be enough for now. For general rejuvenation, three sessions are typical, while established acne scarring may need four to six. Your practitioner will recommend the number of sessions your skin actually needs, rather than a set package for everyone.

SkinPen treatments in a course are spaced several weeks apart, giving your skin time to repair and build collagen between sessions.
The exact interval depends on your skin and the concern being treated, and your practitioner will confirm it when planning your course. Spacing treatments this way allows each collagen response to develop before the next session begins.
Results are assessed against your starting point. Texture improvements often become visible within one to two weeks of a session and continue to build across the course, with healthier, more even skin lasting up to around six months after a course. Your practitioner will review your progress during the course and again after your final session, and advise on maintenance treatments if helpful. For aftercare advice between sessions, see our SkinPen treatment page.
Across a three-treatment course, your practitioner assesses your skin, plans each session around how it responds, and reviews your progress as the course continues.
| Stage | What happens | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
Before your first treatment | Your practitioner assesses your skin type, concerns, medical history and current skincare. Where helpful, skin imaging and clinical assessment records your starting point. | A clear plan for your course, and a baseline that makes changes easier to see later. |
Each treatment | A topical numbing cream is applied for comfort, then SkinPen is passed across the treatment area, with the depth adjusted to the area and concern. | Plan to be with us for around an hour. Afterwards, your skin will look pink or red, similar to mild sunburn, which typically settles within 24 to 48 hours. |
Between treatments | At each visit, your practitioner checks how your skin responded to the last session. | Your plan may be adjusted, such as changing the depth or focusing on particular areas. |
The complimentary HydraFacial supports your course with a deep cleanse and hydration, and is booked at a separate appointment from your SkinPen treatments.
A HydraFacial cleanses, gently exfoliates and hydrates the skin with no downtime. It does not replace microneedling or add to its collagen-stimulating effect, but it can help your skin look fresh and well cared for while your course progresses.
Because the skin is sensitive in the days after microneedling, your HydraFacial is not performed on the same day as SkinPen. Your practitioner will advise on the best time to book it. Many patients like to use it as a finishing touch before an event, as it has no downtime.

SkinPen focuses on collagen and texture, while other skin treatments work on resurfacing, hydration or firmness, so they are sometimes combined in one plan.
| Treatment | Main purpose | Results timeline |
|---|---|---|
| SkinPen microneedling | Stimulates collagen and improves texture | Gradual, building over a course |
| Chemical peels | Exfoliate and resurface the skin | Faster surface improvement |
| Skin boosters | Improve hydration and glow | Relatively quick |
| HydraFacial | Cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate | Immediate, short-term refresh |

Throughout October 2026, our course of three SkinPen microneedling treatments is £945 and includes a complimentary HydraFacial.
The course includes:
A skin assessment before your first treatment
Three SkinPen microneedling treatments, spaced as advised by your practitioner
One complimentary HydraFacial, booked at a separate appointment
Progress reviews during and after your course
The course is subject to consultation and suitability. If you start your course in October, there may be time to complete it before the festive season, depending on the spacing your practitioner recommends.
For some patients, yes. A single SkinPen session can brighten the skin and give it a fresher appearance. For texture concerns, acne scarring or enlarged pores, a course usually gives more noticeable results, as collagen builds over several sessions. Your practitioner will recommend the number of treatments your skin needs after your assessment.
SkinPen treatments are spaced several weeks apart, so your skin has time to repair and build collagen between sessions. Your practitioner will confirm the exact interval for you when planning your course, based on your skin and the concern being treated.
Your progress is reviewed at each treatment appointment, when your practitioner checks how your skin responded to the previous session and adjusts your plan if needed. You will also have a review after your final session, comparing your skin with your starting point and discussing whether maintenance treatments would be helpful.
Your HydraFacial is booked at a separate appointment, never on the same day as SkinPen, as the skin is more sensitive for a few days after microneedling. Your practitioner will recommend the best time within your course. As it has no downtime, many patients like to save it for a fresh-looking finish before an event.
Most patients tolerate SkinPen well. A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment to keep you comfortable, and many patients describe the sensation as a light vibration or prickling.
Redness similar to mild sunburn is common for the first 24 to 48 hours, and the skin may feel tight or sensitive. Most patients return to normal activities shortly afterwards, using high-factor SPF while the skin settles.
