If you’ve had Aqualyx recently, don’t be surprised if the treated area looks a little fuller before it looks smaller. Swelling is an expected part of Aqualyx recovery and is usually most noticeable in the first few days before gradually settling. Your results take a little longer, as your body needs time to process the fat cells affected by treatment.

So, while it can be tempting to check the area for changes straight away, Aqualyx results are best judged over the following weeks rather than days. Here’s what you can expect from swelling, recovery and results as the area begins to settle:

What happens immediately after Aqualyx?

Immediately after Aqualyx, you can expect some swelling around the treated area. You may also notice redness, warmth, tenderness or bruising around the injection sites.

This means you shouldn’t expect the area to look slimmer as soon as you leave the clinic. In fact, swelling can temporarily make it look larger.

The area may also feel slightly firm or uneven beneath the skin while it recovers. These early changes are part of the post-treatment response and should settle gradually.

Your clinical team will explain what to expect before you leave and give you aftercare advice for the area you have treated.

Aqualyx - How it works

Why does Aqualyx cause swelling?

Aqualyx causes swelling because it triggers a response within the treated fatty tissue. The treatment is injected directly into a localised pocket of fat, where it disrupts the membranes of the targeted fat cells. Your body then gradually processes and clears the affected cells. This process creates a local inflammatory response, which can lead to swelling, tenderness and warmth after treatment.

The amount of swelling varies. The treatment area, amount of product used and your individual response can all make a difference. For this reason, someone else’s Aqualyx recovery may look quite different from yours.Importantly, more swelling does not necessarily mean a better result. It is simply one part of the body’s response to treatment.

How long does Aqualyx swelling last?

Aqualyx swelling is usually most noticeable during the first few days before gradually settling. However, there is no exact point at which swelling disappears for everyone. You may find the area looks puffier immediately after treatment and during the following days. It should then become less noticeable as your recovery progresses.

Some firmness or tenderness can take longer to disappear than the visible swelling itself. Larger treatment areas may also take longer to settle. If your swelling is getting worse rather than better, or isn’t settling in the way you were advised to expect, contact the clinic for guidance.

What is the Aqualyx recovery timeline?

Everyone recovers slightly differently, but it can be useful to know the general pattern.

Time after Aqualyx What you may notice
Treatment day Swelling, redness, warmth and tenderness can develop around the treated area. Bruising is also possible.
24 to 48 hours Swelling may become more noticeable before it starts to settle. The area can feel tender or firm.
First week Early swelling and redness should begin to improve. Bruising or firmness may still be visible or noticeable.
Weeks 2 to 4 The area should continue to settle. However, your final result is still developing beneath the surface.

Remember that recovery and results happen on different timelines. Your swelling may have largely settled before you can see the full effect of the treatment. Equally, lingering swelling can temporarily hide early changes. This is why it is better to give the area time before deciding whether Aqualyx has worked for you.

When do Aqualyx results start to show?

Aqualyx results are not immediate. Visible changes develop gradually because your body needs time to process and clear the fat cells affected by treatment. This is very different from a treatment that physically removes fat during the procedure. With Aqualyx, the treatment starts a process that continues after you leave the clinic.

As the initial swelling settles and your body processes the treated cells, you may begin to notice the area changing. Exactly when this becomes visible will depend on the area treated and your individual response. This gradual process also means that looking in the mirror every day isn’t particularly helpful. Changes can be subtle from one day to the next and easier to appreciate when you compare photographs taken several weeks apart.

When can you judge your final Aqualyx result?

You should wait until the initial swelling has fully settled and the treatment has had time to take effect before judging your Aqualyx results. Assessing the area too early can be misleading. Swelling may make it appear larger, while temporary firmness can change how it feels beneath the skin.

A clinical review provides a better opportunity to assess your progress. Dr Duncan Brennand can compare the treated area with your starting point and decide whether it is still developing or whether another session might be appropriate.

Before-and-after photographs can also help. Ideally, these should use similar lighting, positioning and angles so that you are making a fair comparison.

How many Aqualyx sessions do you need?

There is no set number of Aqualyx sessions that everyone needs.

The size and location of the fat pocket, your anatomy and the degree of change you want to achieve all affect the treatment plan. Your response to your first treatment also provides useful information when deciding whether further sessions would be worthwhile.

This is why it is better to think in terms of your individual treatment plan rather than aiming for a predetermined number of appointments.

Aqualyx is designed for targeted pockets of fat rather than general weight loss. Dr Brennand will assess the area during consultation and explain whether Aqualyx is appropriate for what you want to achieve.

What affects your Aqualyx results?

Aqualyx results vary because every treatment area and every patient is different.

Factor Why it matters
Size and location of the fat pocket A small, clearly defined area will require a different approach from a larger treatment area.
Your individual anatomy Fat distribution, skin quality and the surrounding tissues all contribute to the final appearance.
The treatment plan The amount of product used and whether further sessions are appropriate will depend on the area and your goals.
Weight stability Aqualyx targets localised fat rather than overall body weight, so it is best suited to people who are already around a stable weight.

What should you do after Aqualyx?

Your Aqualyx aftercare will depend on the area treated and your individual treatment, so always follow the instructions given to you by the clinic. In general, you may be advised to keep gently active and stay well hydrated while the area recovers. You may also need to temporarily avoid strenuous exercise and significant heat, such as saunas, steam rooms or hot tubs.

Avoid adding massage or medication to your own aftercare routine unless Dr Brennand or your clinical team has specifically advised you to do so. If you’re unsure whether something is safe during your recovery, contact the clinic rather than relying on generic aftercare advice online.

When should you contact the clinic after Aqualyx?

Some swelling, redness, tenderness, warmth and bruising can be expected after Aqualyx. These effects should generally improve as your recovery progresses. However, you should contact the clinic if your symptoms are becoming more severe rather than settling, or if you experience anything that doesn’t match the recovery you were advised to expect.

Increasing pain, spreading redness, unusual heat, discharge or feeling unwell should be reviewed by a clinician. You should also get in touch if you are simply worried about how the area is healing. You don’t need to decide for yourself whether something is “normal enough”. If you’re concerned, the L’Atelier Aesthetics team can advise whether you need to be reviewed.

Frequently Asked Questions about Aqualyx?

How long does swelling last after Aqualyx?

Aqualyx swelling is usually most noticeable during the first few days and then gradually settles. Some tenderness or firmness may take longer to disappear. Recovery varies depending on the treatment area and your individual response.

When do Aqualyx results appear?

Aqualyx results appear gradually rather than immediately. Your body needs time to process the fat cells affected by treatment, while early swelling can temporarily hide changes. Your clinician can advise when it is appropriate to assess your result based on the area treated.

Is swelling normal after Aqualyx?

Yes, some swelling is an expected part of Aqualyx recovery. Redness, tenderness, warmth or bruising may also occur. However, swelling should gradually improve, so contact the clinic if it is worsening or causing concern.

How many Aqualyx treatments will I need?

There is no fixed number. The treatment plan depends on the size and location of the area, your anatomy, your goals and how you respond. Dr Brennand can advise whether further treatment is appropriate after assessing your progress.

Does Aqualyx work immediately?

No. Aqualyx starts a process that continues after your appointment. Your body gradually processes the affected fat cells, so visible changes take time to develop.

When can I exercise after Aqualyx?

You may need to avoid strenuous exercise for a short period after Aqualyx while the area recovers. Follow the specific advice given by your clinical team, as recommendations may vary according to the area treated.

Can the treated fat come back?

Aqualyx targets fat cells within a specific area, but it does not prevent future weight gain or changes in body composition. Maintaining a stable weight can therefore help protect your longer-term result.

When should you expect to see the difference?

Aqualyx results take time. The first stage is recovery, when swelling, tenderness and other temporary effects begin to settle. Visible changes come later as your body gradually processes the treated fat cells.

For this reason, try not to judge the area during the first few days or compare your recovery too closely with someone else’s. The more useful comparison is between your own starting point and the area once it has had enough time to settle.

If you’re considering Aqualyx, a consultation with Dr Duncan Brennand at L’Atelier Aesthetics will help establish whether it is suitable for the area you want to treat. He can also explain what you can realistically expect from your results and recovery before you decide whether to go ahead.
