Microneedling on a need-to-know basis

  • Blogs

Your skin sheds 30,000 dead cells every minute, and every 28 days we have a completely new set of skin cells. Our skin, therefore, is constantly changing and reacting to our environment, so enacting real change that dives beneath the surface level is difficult without the right treatments or products. Our skin represents our choices, lifestyle, and environment, so its long-term health is far more beneficial to focus on rather than its short-term appearance (especially because every 28 days we’re working with a new coating altogether). Certain skin complaints affect our skin’s health and they can be complex and difficult to treat without professional knowledge. Congested skin, acne scarring, and hyperpigmentation all take a little more TLC than publicly available products and this is why we’d like to introduce you to microneedling.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling uses a handheld device with lots of tiny needles for treatment. Treatment involves piercing the affected area of skin with these tiny needles, creating a controlled wounding on the surface. These needles are adjustable to different ‘lengths’ which affects how deeply their pierce the skin. This means treatment is tailored to your individual needs, so those who require a little more skin stimulation receive different treatment than those with superficial concerns.

How does it work?

The device pierces the skin and leaves behind thousands of tiny needle columns in the dermis. This controlled wounding reawakens the body’s natural healing and collagen production processes. The skin is prompted to regenerate, close the puncture created, and produce new skin cells and collagen to heal this slightly damaged skin. This encourages a positive skin cell turnover, with the new skin cells forcibly produced essentially pushing the damaged ones off the surface of your skin to replace them. The process not only encourages the formation of new surface skin cells, but the collagen produced during healing also strengthens the lower levels of the dermis. Microneedling, therefore, helps us to create healthier looking, feeling, and working skin on multiple levels within the dermis.

What does it treat?

Microneedling is an incredibly diverse treatment, and it tackles anything from dull skin to troubled and scarred skin. It treats enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, active acne, and a complexion that looks tired or dulled. This means even if you’re not suffering from a complex skin complaint but you’re noticing your skin isn’t glowing like it should, you’re still suitable for microneedling. However, if you are unfortunately battling with acne scarring, sun damage, or stretch marks, you’re also suitable for microneedling. With microneedling in Mayfair you can essentially reset the skin, paving the way for a positive skin cell turnover, plumping of tissue, and facial rejuvenation.

Wait, it treats acne scarring?

Acne scarring may feel permanent, but there are definitely some viable solutions available and one of those is microneedling. When an acne spot bursts or is particularly aggressive or swollen, the skin goes into trauma and desperately tries to heal itself. It does this to protect us from an open wound and close off the affected pore, but because it is in trauma it reacts all too quickly. This means it produces an excess of collagen and skin cells to heal the area as quickly as possible, which causes raised or dimpled scarring when the fibres don’t knit together properly. Our skin means well, but it does leave us with a reminder of our acne. Microneedling’s puncturing of the skin doesn’t force it into trauma yet still prompts it to create controlled amounts of collagen and skin cells. This ushers the skin to shed the damaged skin cells atop the scarring, sloughing them away and gradually releveling the skin over a course of treatments.

Will microneedling affect my skincare routine, too?

Studies have shown that after microneedling, your topical skincare products could penetrate deeper into the skin. This is true for moisturisers and cleansers, because the pores have been opened and are extra receptive to your skincare efforts. We’d recommend wearing mineral-based makeup after your treatment purely because of your skin’s new absorption abilities. It won’t clog your pores, so your skin can take full advantage of the microneedling treatment. You may not even feel the need to wear any, since your skin will be glowing and silky smooth.
