Everything you need to consider before having lip fillers

  • Blogs

Lip fillers are very, very in vogue right now, but we see a lot of clients all seeking slightly different results from one another. We believe in the importance of an honest and confidential consultation to best assess your desired results, but there are some points to consider before you visit our skin clinic on Harley Street. If you’re looking for guidance on what to consider before having lip fillers, you’ve come to the right place.

What are lip fillers made of?

Most dermal fillers, including the brands we use, are made of a substance that closely resembles a natural bodily sugar, hyaluronic acid. This substance gives skin its volume, laxity, and plumpness, so it is only natural to include it in dermal fillers. Because of the close similarities between the dermal filler and this bodily sugar, there is very little chance of side effects and almost 0 chance of rejection by the body. You may have heard horror stories about permanent lip fillers that use liquid silicone, but these are thankfully a thing of the past. Temporary and much safer dermal fillers are now used.

What should I consider before having lip fillers?

  • Research who will be performing your treatment

Take your time to find a practitioner and clinic that you trust and like the work of. Look for qualified professionals who have plenty of before and after photos, reviews, and who fill you with confidence. Medical and health professionals are definitely who you want to keep an eye out for, because they understand the anatomy and physiology of the body and face better than anyone. This way, if any complications do happen to arise, your practitioner will be skilled and experienced in managing them for you and setting your mind at ease.

  • Think about the results you’d like to receive

Are you seeking a fuller and more glamorous pout, or are you seeking just a little added volume to help soften the appearance of ageing? Coming to your consultation with an idea of how you’d like your lips to look allows your practitioner to build a treatment plan around you and deliver the best outcome. This provides an opportunity for them to also suggest alternative treatments or advice on where your lip fillers will be placed to best achieve your results. However, note that your desired results might be achieved after a few treatments and top-ups! Even celebrities have more than one appointment to slowly build up to those fuller lips, and we wouldn’t want to add too much too soon.

  • Prepare for some (minor) side effects

Lip fillers do come with some minor side effects that your practitioner should notify you about. Some minor bruising at the injection sites, swelling, and soreness are likely to occur after your treatment and last for up to 2 days, but oral anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen will ease these. Arnica bruise cream can be used on localised bruising, too. This treatment is known as a ‘lunch time procedure’ because it only takes around half an hour and the results are instant, but you could still have some noticeable side effects after. Nothing that some tactical makeup couldn’t cover, though.

  • If you don’t like your results, you can reverse them

One of the benefits of using hyaluronic acid-based fillers, aside from their safety, is that you can dissolve them if you don’t take to your results. Lip fillers are only temporary anyway and they dissolve within the body naturally over time, but if you’d rather reverse them sooner then your practitioner can dissolve them in-clinic. All this takes is a few injections of a harmless enzyme called hyaluronidase that feel much the same as the initial filler did, and this works to quickly dissolve filler. Your lips will return to post-procedure normality shortly afterwards.
