ThermaVein Treatment on Harley Street

Thread veins on the face and body are common and usually harmless, but many people choose to treat them for cosmetic reasons.

Reduce visible thread veins with ThermaVein

ThermaVein is a targeted treatment that uses controlled heat to collapse superficial thread veins, allowing the body to naturally reabsorb them over time. It can be used on both facial and selected body veins and does not involve injections or laser energy, making it suitable for delicate areas.

ThermaVein Treatment for Thread Veins

Visible thread veins can appear on both the face and body, often becoming more noticeable over time. While they are usually harmless, many patients find them cosmetically bothersome, particularly on the nose, cheeks, chin, legs and ankles.

At L’Atelier Aesthetics, ThermaVein is used as a precise, non-surgical solution to treat small thread veins on the face and body, following a full medical consultation to assess suitability and vein type.

What is ThermaVein?

ThermaVein is an advanced medical device designed to treat superficial thread veins using controlled thermocoagulation. A fine probe delivers a brief burst of heat directly into the vein, causing it to collapse and gradually be reabsorbed by the body. Unlike lasers or injectable treatments, ThermaVein does not rely on light or chemicals, making it suitable for delicate areas such as the face as well as selected areas of the body.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

ThermaVein is most effective for small, superficial thread veins, including:

Face
Nose (alar veins), Cheeks, Chin, Jawline, Periorbital area (carefully selected cases)

Body
Legs (small thread veins only), Ankles, Knees, Chest and décolletage, Other localised areas with fine surface veins
Book a consultation

How Does ThermaVein Work?

The ThermaVein probe is placed directly over the thread vein. A short pulse of high-frequency energy heats the vein wall, causing it to collapse. Blood is naturally redirected through healthier vessels, and the treated vein is gradually absorbed by the body over the following weeks.

Treatment is highly targeted, helping to minimise impact on surrounding skin.

What Makes Thermavein Different?

Unlike many laser or IPL treatments, Thermavein does not rely on light absorption. Instead, it uses direct heat energy applied precisely to the vessel.

This offers several advantages:

• Highly targeted treatment of individual thread veins
• Suitable for very fine or superficial capillaries
• Minimal impact on surrounding skin
• Safe for a wide range of skin types
• No need for compression stockings or injections

For patients with small red facial veins, this level of precision can provide excellent cosmetic improvement without the downtime associated with more aggressive vascular treatments.

Thread veins Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Thread veins can have different underlying causes, particularly on the body. Your appointment will always begin with a medical consultation to:

  • Assess vein type and suitability

  • Exclude underlying venous disease where appropriate

  • Discuss alternative or complementary treatments if needed

  • Create a tailored treatment plan

This ensures safe, appropriate and realistic outcomes.

What is ThermaVein and how does ThermaVein work?

hermaVein is a non-surgical treatment designed to reduce small thread veins using controlled thermocoagulation. ThermaVein works by delivering a brief pulse of heat directly into the vein, causing it to collapse so it can be naturally reabsorbed by the body over time.

Is ThermaVein suitable for treating facial thread veins?

Yes, ThermaVein is commonly used to treat small facial thread veins, particularly on the nose, cheeks and chin. ThermaVein is well suited to delicate facial areas because it is highly targeted and does not rely on lasers or injectable solutions.

Can ThermaVein be used on thread veins on the legs and body?

ThermaVein can be used on selected small thread veins on the body, including the legs, ankles and knees. During your consultation, we will assess whether ThermaVein is appropriate for your vein type or whether another treatment may be more suitable.

Does ThermaVein treatment hurt?

Most patients describe ThermaVein treatment as a brief sharp heat or stinging sensation that lasts only a fraction of a second. Discomfort during ThermaVein treatment is usually mild and well tolerated, and anaesthetic is not normally required.

How many ThermaVein treatments will I need?

The number of ThermaVein sessions required depends on the size, number and location of the thread veins being treated. Some veins respond to a single ThermaVein session, while others may require multiple treatments for optimal results.

How long does it take to see results from ThermaVein?

Results from ThermaVein can be seen immediately for some veins, while others fade gradually over several weeks. The full results of ThermaVein treatment typically develop as the body reabsorbs the treated veins.

Are the results from ThermaVein permanent?

Veins treated with ThermaVein do not usually return. However, ThermaVein cannot prevent new thread veins from developing in the future, particularly on the legs, where underlying circulation and lifestyle factors play a role.

What are the risks and side effects of ThermaVein?

Common side effects of ThermaVein include temporary redness, mild swelling and small scabs at the treatment site. Less commonly, ThermaVein may cause temporary pigmentation changes or blistering. Serious complications from ThermaVein are rare when treatment is performed by trained professionals.

Is ThermaVein safe for all skin types?

ThermaVein is suitable for most skin types because it does not use laser energy or light-based technology. Your suitability for ThermaVein will always be assessed during a consultation to ensure safe and appropriate treatment.

How does ThermaVein compare to laser treatment for thread veins?

ThermaVein and laser treatments target different types of thread veins. ThermaVein is often preferred for very small, superficial veins, particularly on the face, while laser treatments may be more suitable for larger or deeper vessels. A consultation will determine whether ThermaVein is the best option for you.

Which is better for thread veins: ThermaVein or microsclerotherapy?

The most suitable treatment depends on the size, depth and location of your veins. ThermaVein is ideal for very fine, superficial thread veins and broken capillaries, particularly on the face and delicate areas of the body, as it uses precise heat to seal the vessels without injections. Microsclerotherapy is typically recommended for larger, more visible veins on the legs, where a targeted injection is used to collapse the vein so it can be naturally reabsorbed by the body.

In many cases, a combination of both treatments may be advised. Larger feeder veins can be treated with microsclerotherapy, followed by ThermaVein to refine and remove any remaining finer surface veins. During your consultation at L’Atelier Aesthetics, your practitioner will assess your concerns and recommend the most effective approach for your individual needs. You can read more below on this topic.

Thermavein vs Microsclerotherapy

When it comes to treating thread veins, one of the most common questions we’re asked is whether ThermaVein or microsclerotherapy is the right option. The answer depends on the type, size and location of the veins, which is why a personalised assessment is always essential. ThermaVein is a highly precise treatment that uses controlled heat to seal very small, superficial vessels. It is particularly effective for fine thread veins, broken capillaries and spider veins on the face and delicate areas of the body. Because the energy is delivered directly to the vessel without injections, it allows for targeted treatment with minimal impact on the surrounding skin.

Microsclerotherapy, on the other hand, is typically used for larger, more visible veins on the legs. This involves injecting a solution into the vein, causing it to collapse and gradually be reabsorbed by the body. It is often the preferred approach when veins sit slightly deeper or are too large to be effectively treated with surface-based technologies alone.

In practice, many patients benefit from a combination of both treatments. Larger feeder veins on the legs may first be treated with microsclerotherapy, followed by ThermaVein to address the finer residual thread veins that remain visible on the surface. This combined approach allows for a more complete and refined result.

At L’Atelier Aesthetics, Dr Duncan Brennand and the clinical team will assess your veins in detail and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan based on what will deliver the safest and most effective outcome.

ThermaVein Aftercare and Recovery at L’Atelier Aesthetics

Following ThermaVein treatment at L’Atelier Aesthetics in Harley Street, most patients experience little to no downtime and can return to their normal activities immediately. Some redness or mild sensitivity in the treated area is entirely normal and typically settles within a few hours. Some thread veins disappear straight away, while others fade gradually over the following weeks as the body naturally reabsorbs the collapsed vessels. A follow-up appointment may be recommended to assess results and treat any remaining veins.

ThermaVein Aftercare Summary

ThermaVein is an advanced, non-surgical treatment that uses controlled thermocoagulation to collapse superficial thread veins on the face and body. A fine probe delivers a brief, precise burst of heat directly into the vein, causing it to collapse without the need for injections, laser energy or compression stockings. At L’Atelier Aesthetics, ThermaVein treatments are carried out by our skilled clinical team following a full medical consultation with Dr Duncan Brennand.

ThermaVein Pre-Treatment Guidance

To prepare for your ThermaVein treatment in London:

  • Arrive with clean skin, free from make-up, moisturiser or SPF in the treatment area
  • Eat before your appointment to ensure comfort
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment to minimise the risk of redness and sensitivity
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure or sunbeds for at least one week prior to treatment
  • Inform your practitioner of any previous vein treatments or relevant medical history

During your visit:

  • A full medical consultation will be carried out to assess vein type and suitability before treatment begins
  • Clinical photographs and consent will be completed if not already done
  • Anaesthetic is not usually required for ThermaVein treatment
  • Treatment time is typically 15 to 45 minutes depending on the number and location of veins being treated

What to Expect Immediately After ThermaVein

ThermaVein is a very well-tolerated treatment with minimal downtime for most patients.

You may experience:

  • Mild redness or warmth around the treated veins
  • Slight swelling or a sensation similar to mild sunburn
  • Small marks or temporary crusting at the treatment points, particularly on the face

These effects are a normal response to the thermocoagulation process and typically settle within a few hours to a couple of days. Some thread veins will disappear immediately following treatment, while others will gradually fade over the coming weeks as the body reabsorbs the treated vessels.

ThermaVein Post-Treatment Care

ThermaVein requires very little formal aftercare, however a few simple steps will help protect the skin and support the best possible outcome.

  • Keep the treated area clean and avoid touching or rubbing it in the hours following treatment
  • Avoid applying make-up or skincare products to the treated area for at least 12 hours
  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or above to any treated facial areas daily, as the skin may be more sensitive to sun exposure following treatment
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure and sunbeds for at least two weeks after treatment
  • Avoid extreme heat including saunas, steam rooms and very hot baths for 48 hours
  • Avoid exfoliating acids, retinoids and active skincare over the treated area for at least five days
  • Do not pick or scratch any small marks or crusting that may appear at the treatment points, allow them to heal naturally

If you are having body veins treated, no compression stockings are required following ThermaVein.

When Will I See Results from ThermaVein?

ThermaVein produces both immediate and gradual results depending on the type and size of the veins treated.

  • Some thread veins collapse and disappear immediately during treatment
  • Others fade progressively over the following four to eight weeks as the body naturally reabsorbs the treated vessels
  • A follow-up appointment is available to assess results and address any remaining veins
  • Multiple sessions may be recommended for more extensive thread veins or where new veins develop over time

Your clinical team will advise on the likely outcome for your specific vein type and the number of sessions that may be needed to achieve your desired result.

Who Should Not Have ThermaVein?

ThermaVein may not be suitable if you have:

  • Active skin infections, open wounds or compromised skin in the treatment area
  • Underlying venous disease that has not been assessed or managed appropriately
  • A pacemaker or implanted electrical device
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Your appointment will always begin with a medical consultation to assess vein type and suitability, exclude any underlying venous disease where appropriate, and ensure ThermaVein is the most appropriate treatment for your individual needs.

When to Contact Us

ThermaVein is a safe and well-established treatment for thread veins when performed by a qualified clinical team. However, please contact L’Atelier Aesthetics if you experience:

  • Blistering or broken skin at the treatment points
