Microneedling For Acne Scarring

Can microneedling make my skin smooth again?

After years of suffering with the extremely unpleasant and sometimes painful symptoms of acne, you have finally recovered. However, you are now left with pesky scarring on your skin which you are unable to conceal using make up. These scars do not have to be a permanent fixture on your skin. There are a number of treatments that we provide here at our Harley Street clinics that will help lessen the appearance of these scars so that you can feel confident again. One of these specialist treatments is Microneedling, a non-invasive procedure whereby multiple tiny, sterile needles puncture the surface of the skin. Despite how this may sound, this treatment is relatively pain-free and is extremely effective for treating the appearance of acne scarring.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling works by creating a trauma within the deeper layers of skin, forcing it to rebuild itself. During this procedure, collagen production is increased which ultimately decreases signs of acne scarring by replacing the collagen that was lost due to acne. As this treatment involves the growth of new skin, this is not a quick fix treatment. You may need up to six treatments before your acne scarring has reached significant improvement. However, you may start to see subtle improvements just a few days after your first treatment. The skin regeneration process takes time and you should prepare for the fact that it may be months before you see the full results.

Is there any down time?

Within the first 24 hours after your microneedling treatment you may experience some minor side effects such as redness, bruising and inflammation which will feel a little like having sunburn. Despite this, recovery from this procedure is relatively quick and your skin should feel normal again two days post treatment. It should be noted that sensitive skin types might find that redness as a result of treatment takes longer to fade. On account of this, the current condition of your skin will be carefully considered beforehand.

Is microneedling the right treatment for me?

Microneedling is more effective on some types of acne scarring than others, it is therefore important to consider whether the results of this treatment will live up to your expectations. For example, Atrophic or depressed scarring is the most common and can be successfully treated using microneedling. However, this treatment is not usually effective when used to treat ‘raised’ scarring. Your dermatologist at L’Atelier Aesthetics will be happy to answer any questions you have and help you decide whether this treatment is right for you. Over time the appearance and texture of your skin will be subject to an amazing transformation with regular microneedling treatments. We hope that because of this you experience an increased level of confidence and self esteem. If you would like to book in for an initial microneedling consultation, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the clinic.
